Perry v. Schwarzenegger

“Today, a single federal judge has negated the will of the people of California. The central premise of the court’s ruling is that it is irrational for the citizenry to decide to retain the traditional definition of marriage. The court holds that the ubiquitous definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is a historical curiosity that serves no purpose whatsoever, but rather is based solely on anti-gay biases. Indeed, the court went so far as to brand as “irrational” all supporters of traditional marriage, which is the vast majority of all people, in America and throughout the world." -by ProtectMarriage.com

I have something to say about the matter. Just weeks ago I wrote a paper concerning this very subject out of my own curiosity. I decided that, although I have many religious reasons why I am opposed to gay marriage, I thought it would be best to show my perspective without involving religious reasons whatsoever (ie:
there are a ton of reasons why in the bible, the Prophet of the Lord told us to and he can see things we can't.. etc, etc.). Although I believe these are valid reasons, those who do not agree with us don't have the same beliefs. So I decided to analyze the situation from a strictly factual angle. Feel free to read my two cents if you wish, but commenting is closed due to the highly controversial nature of this subject. However, feel free to email me on the matter if you feel so inclined. Or give me a high five on facebook, because I know you're on both right now. (;

Over the last few years, gay marriage has become a hot topic of debate in the United States. It has recently been very controversial in states such as Hawaii and California due to ballots containing propositions either defending marriage as it is or containing amendments hoping to legalize it for homosexuals. The concern with gay marriage, for those in favor of it, is that it is a civil right that should be granted to all people. References to Women’s rights and abolishment of slavery are often used in defending this case. Those opposed to it argue that it infringes upon the definition of what marriage truly is. Religious freedoms and concerns with teaching children acceptance of such an act are generally referenced when defending this position. However, the true predicament lies in analyzing the United States’ Constitution. Everyone is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Should homosexuals then be entitled to pursue happiness through marriage? Furthermore, would gay marriage infringe upon the lives and pursuit of happiness of others? Yes is the appropriate answer to both of these questions. Although I believe that every individual is entitled to make their own decisions, I also believe that it should not be an option when it jeopardizes other individuals’ freedoms. This paper will explore the reasons why gay marriage imposes on the freedoms and pursuit of happiness of others.

First, where does the word and act of marriage originate from? Many cultures have their own definitions and explanations as to of why marriage should exist. One of the earliest recorded definitions outside of religious texts comes from Mesopotamia’s Hammurabi’s Code. It is a well preserved ancient Babylonian text that dates back to 1790 BC. The code consists of 282 laws that were written by Hammurabi “to bring about the rule of righteousness in the land” (King 1). Even in the earliest recorded code, the law of marriage was declared by a religious individual who wrote the laws with direction by God. As many other religions believe, God established the bond of matrimony when the very first individuals were placed on this Earth. This therefore proves that marriage is not an act originated by the United States Constitution, but rather, in many lifetimes previous, and all referenced by individuals claiming that God was their source of direction. Furthermore, this shows us that religion in fact plays a fundamental role in marriage’s very existence. Therefore, religious denominations have a right to be concerned when their belief of marriage is being altered, and are justified in feeling their religious opinions are being disrespected.

Where the definition of marriage is concerned, many anthropologists have written various definitions, all with a common identity. In the book The History of Human Marriage by Edvard Westermarck, marriage is defined as “a more or less durable connection between male and female lasting beyond the mere act of propagation till after the birth of the offspring” (71). In the anthropological handbook Notes & Queries of Anthropology, the definition is written as “a union between a man and a woman such that children born to the woman are the recognized legitimate offspring of both partners” (Garson 110). These various definitions include the commonality that marriage is in fact defined as being between a man and a woman.

Ultimately, without heterosexual couples, society would not exist. Homosexual marriage advocates defend their stance by proclaiming that homosexuals contribute to society the same as anyone else. However; without the help of fertility medical facilities, sperm banks, and the births of adoptable children, homosexual couples are unable to contribute to society for more than their lifetime. Societies are not built by single generations, but by the birth of children over many generations. Simple biology proves that without the sperm of a man and egg of a woman, human life would not exist. Should this lack of procreation then be lawfully accepted as a valuable entity of our society?

If homosexual marriage were to be legalized, childhood educational curriculum would be altered to include information of the “different” types of families. This is understandable; however, if children are to be informed, they should also be informed of the risks involved with such a lifestyle. Even though the production and consumption of tobacco products is legal, the government requires certain information to be available to the consumers. The serious health risks should be a requirement of consent where gay marriage is concerned. Various studies show that the health risks involved with homosexual lifestyle include physical damage, more than 6 types of cancer, more than 12 common STD’s, HIV/AID’s, and more (ElHage 4). If children are to be taught that gay marriage is a normal part of society, they should also be informed of the severe health risks involved which are comparable to the risks of second hand smoke. It is safe to say that the lives of more Americans would be at risk, and therefore gay marriage imposes on the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of others.

Gay Marriage imposes upon families’ rights for parents to teach their children what they believe are correct principles. It endangers more lives by spreading more diseases and health risks amongst the community. Gay marriage would allow homosexuals to redefine the original definitions of marriage, which is religious in origin, and would impose on the religious rights of others. Homosexuals are unable to contribute their own biological children to this planet, and thus would not contribute to the building of future societies.

Thanks for listening to a ranting woman.

House Arrest.

The ugliest, creepiest, and most horrifying creation on this earth has been keeping me under house arrest. It also has forced Birdie into minimal potty breaks, and myself into extremely minimal garden tending. I even went so far as to walk around our apartment to water our tomato plant from above our patio fence.

I hate this thing so much. It's scary, it's smart, did I mention ugly?, and HUGE. The tunneled web is almost as gross as the thing itself. I call it the mother spider. And it's life must end. The last few nights we've seen it crawl out of it's nasty home and sit out for hunting. Creepiest looking thing of my life. Andrew has already made 2 attempts at killing it, with no luck. It's made it into that terrible corner both times, and NOW we've only pissed it off. I know it knows. And it is definitely angry. I swear it watches me if I let Birdie out because recently I've seen it's legs moving around (I have chills and a very fast heart rate going right now as I tell you this). And it's re-enforced it's fortress and I think it knows what's about to happen. I am now worried it's plotting to attack Turdling, and I can't sleep at night. I stay up for hours paranoid that it's children are the reasons I feel an 'itch' or a 'tickle' on my leg/body, and I feel sorry Andrew has to deal with my reactions, although I think I could scream and he'd continue sleep talking.

I'm not overreacting. No. I know I'm not because in the month and a half that we've been here, I have seen and killed more spiders then I've ever seen in my LIFE. I KID YOU NOT. We have found many 'mini-mothers' in the house and frankly I'm about to lose it. I worry that Bird is going to get bit in the night in her cage on the floor. And I now make my bed in the most anal way possible to make SURE I don't tuck any in comfortably. I have reason, considering I've found 2 on my made bed, and 3 on the lovesac. I SIT AND SLEEP IN THESE PLACES!

For the first time in my life I actually understand summer sales, and those turd friends of mine who wheel and deal and sell pest control. I've never seen a need, nor found their cause worthy, but that's only because my sweet sweet landlord has always had our home sprayed in the spring, and we've lived spider free for our entire marriage. Have I thanked you for that, Mindy? THANK YOU! Also, the only pest we dealt with growing up was always an insane amount of ants due to the fact that our house was built on their 'hill'.

Anyway, tonight when Andrew gets home it's WAR. We will not stop until I know this thing is dead and gone. I can't do this anymore. I would rather swim with sharks then live with these terrors around my home --oh wait, I've already done the first... happily.

Operation END MOTHER SPIDER starts now. With our spade, spray (I'm going to purchase in MINUTES), jar, shoes, whatever it takes.

it's going down.
or so help me..

Registering

If I could have registered at Alice Lane when I was getting married, I would currently be rockin the best stuff ever! I love them, and I wish I got dishware and furnishings there instead of at BB&B (registering at BB&B was a mistake... ). Target was great, but it would have been nice to have a heavenly registry to go along with it. Practical? Maybe not... but a girl can dream. I will own a beautiful bed of theirs someday.

Homemade Phrases

The killer for me is "At the end of the day..."

Really? What about it? Where did this even come from? When the day ends it's time to go to bed. I don't see what that has to do with life long goals. I've found that among other places, this phrase is used all too often on the seasons of the Bachelor and Bachelorette. I'm not even kidding you, it kills me. Apparently there's no better way to describe where you want to be in life than "you know, just like, at the end of the day I wanna end up with my best friend." ...all 24 of you should just get together at the end of the day if that's what you all want, cuz the bummer news is that the majority of you (all but 1) aren't going to get your end of the day goal.

High five. It's the end of the day so I'm going to sleep.
Night!

PS. The sun is supposed to be BEAMIN' tomorrow so we're going to find a beach, YESS! Can't wait. Hope you do something new and adventuresome too. Just do it so at the end of the day... you can say you did it. Haha. Okay, I'm done I promise.

Cup o' Sugar

How do you know if you're a noisy neighbor? I mean. We've never been called out on it, and we don't listen to loud music or scream at each other, but I still wonder. Our walls make me curious. We have a single lady living next door and we never hear her. Not one peep. Until.... she sneezes, or coughs (I can't really tell what it is to be honest). Or when either she or the upstairs neighbor close their sliding door. Or when the child upstairs is upset. We hear that. I can hear the laundry going in the hall, but no tv's or music or conversations from any of the condo's. Why is it we hear some things and not others when I honestly think a sneeze is on a quieter scale than say a movie. I'm probably wrong.

I wonder this because sometimes we watch a movie late. Sometimes Bird gets in trouble for pooping (love re-potty training wherever we go). Goodness knows everyone in the whole complex can probably hear the insanely loud Sun Chips bag I just opened (you know, the new biodegradable ones, awesome.. but absolutely ridiculously NOISY). And sometimes a certain husband likes to joke about potty things. Farts & "dugans" in particular. I think he'd be embarrassed if our kindergarten-teacher-neighbor-lady heard him. Then again she probably hears that all day from the young ones. And come to think of it Andrew's probably more embarrassed that I'm writing this.. and then again if anyone KNOWS him, they already know this.

Anyway, the point is not potty humor. Or how much our future children will love their dad because he throws "sock bombs" and gives them "covered wagons" ...because he will, and I already know they'll love it. The point is how do you KNOW if they can hear you? We've asked but I think people are polite in those situations. They feel considered when you approach them with something like that, and then wipe the slate clean since you were being considerate and no longer want to yell at you or pound the wall if you're being too loud.

We probably are quiet as mouses.. or meese.. or what have you..

But I still wonder.

Still LOST? ...I am.

I enjoyed the finale, I did, but I didn't feel fulfilled. There were still too many questions they NEVER answered and acted like they would get to, but didn't. Don't get me wrong, the 'remembering' and whatnot was very touching at the end, but the ACTUAL ending/EVENT that happened when it was over, really didn't make sense to me. Why the island? What destiny? ..Moving on? ...REALLY?

..oh well.

This is hilarious, it just goes to show how many open ended questions they really did leave. And this only names a few... enjoy. (:

asdkmewo84 --0w3kd...

"I'm running around like a chicken with it's legs cut off."
-Very obscure quote. Family, you're not invited to guess.

I think my head might fall off from all this un-known-ness.
Finding an apartment? not-check
Packing up our home? not-check
Planning the uhaul pickup etc? not-check
Having a midway hotel stop booked? not-check
Knowing where we'll live when we come back? not-check
Being sad that we're leaving our little home of 2 years? CHECK!

BAAAH!
Someone, please turn into my 'booking/organizing fairy' ..I'll love you dearly forever.

On a good note.
Boyfriend's done with finals! HORRAY!
Maybe he can save me..

This reminiscent photo is HONESTLY how I feel right about now.
My hair might look a little insane tomorrow to prove it.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda..

Do you ever leave a conversation wishing things went differently? Or, you feel like nothing you could have said would have been right? Or, that there's really no reason for you to still be dwelling on the situation because you know that the other parties are not even thinking about what happened, and probably never will. That basically your brain is skipping and you just have to press 'next track' in order for you to let it go.
I think this all is happening because, believe it or not, I've been really trying to take some personal strides lately and treat people very differently. It's actually a very conscious decision that requires a lot of effort on my part, which leads me to dwell on what happened later. Analyzing and wondering, did I handle it right? Which can be a good and a bad thing. Good, if the other person validates your efforts. Bad, if you feel like the person could have cared less about how you handle things. Then you end up lamenting for no reason. Am I making any sense? If not, sorry.. I just felt like I needed an outlet, and this offers me the best thing next to my husband. Who is heaven sent, and has assured me that I'm doing a good job, and that I'm worrying about things that shouldn't even matter. Oh man, sometimes I wish I wasn't a girl and didn't naturally over think everything. I just need to keep in mind that different situations need to be handled differently.
As my dad would say.. "you're should'ing all over yourself"
Forgive the jumbled thoughts.. the end.

Someday I will understand why.

Wednesday morning of this week brought some pretty scary/horrific/fearful scenarios with it. It was that morning that I had realized "oh my goodness. this can't be happening, but it very well COULD be." My heart was shattered and for the span of the following two days, I had become very aware that I was miscarrying. Now I want to stop you right there and let you know that I am doing very well. And I also want you to know, that yes.. it's true. I am no longer expecting.
I have decided to share quite a bit of the information with you so that A- I don't have to repeat myself more than is necessary, and B- so that you can understand to some degree what it is exactly that I'm going through.
Now as sad as it may be, this miscarriage has brought many wonderful learning experiences into my life, in the short yet terrifyingly long past 3 days. I want you to know that I informed the world of our precious news fairly early and for good reason. Almost days after I had learned of our conception, I ran into a speed bump, and was terrified of loosing the baby. That night my sweet husband and our home teacher gave me a very profound blessing. The spirit was unbearably strong, and we all knew that our Heavenly Father was talking to me. He informed us in that blessing that we needed not worry, and that our baby would be born to live a wonderful life full of many experiences that this world has to offer. It was after that moment, that I felt it un-necessary to keep it our news a secret. I truly felt in my heart, what better way to show my faith then to tell the world of our news. At this point in time, do I understand WHY he would tell us these things and then have them not follow through? Of course not. But do I blame God in any way for what has happened? Absolutely not. If anything my faith has only grown stronger through this experience then ever. I have never felt my Savior & Father closer. But you better believe that I will definitely have to ask him for some explainations in the not too near future. Also, do I regret having informed everyone? Not at all. I am still extremely glad that I did, because I know my Father in heaven felt my faith being exercised, and I KNOW he recognised the sincerity of my heart.
Moving on to the recent events..
Wednesday was the most horrifying day of all. I had no answers, and my heart ached for what could be and WAS happening. I could do nothing but wait. Wait for answers and wait for help. Amidst the chaos of it all, my poor husband has been stressed up to his ears with finals & could hardly take care of himself, let alone a miscarrying wife. So luckily enough, my mother came to help us make it through the week. Yesterday we learned that yes, I was in fact miscarrying our child, and so much more. Turns out yours truly is very likely to have fairly medium/high risk pregnancies. I have a mildly heart shaped uterus (precious. ..not) that makes KEEPING pregnancies more difficult for myself than for most women. Location of the baby is KEY and will have to be monitored from here on out anytime we conceive. So what does this mean? Well luckily from this point on we wont be going into this blindly. Now we know what to watch out for and worry about (a bitter-sweet reality). We also now have a DREAM of an OB to work with on the pregnancies to come. He had to do my D&C (no we didn't read scriptures, but I definitely have been really into those lately) today, which for those who don't know, that's a surgery to remove whats left, so that I don't have to miscarry for weeks to come.
So naturally, all of this has been a lot to handle. It's been a bit extreme going from expecting, to surgery, & finding out I have a pretty complicated situation for the future. Yes, it is sad, but like I said, I KNOW it is all happening for a reason. Reasons I don't know, but for a reason none the less. Also, I want my close friends and dear loved ones to know ((ESPECIALLY those who are expecting/or have had babies recently)) that this in NO way bitters my love and excitement for their wonderful babies and babies to be. If anything, I am even moreso happy for them because I was able to taste what it was like for 3 months, and can now relate that much more. I love you guys very much and still want to be your preggers buddy. :)
So to keep positive in this time of semi-agony I have been looking at the bright side. I've had myself a nice diet coke, and look forward to sitting in a very cozy hot tub when we get home to California. And guess what, I now get to surf with no concerns what so ever. ..anything to stay positive, right?
And on an ending note, this has helped me keep positive above all..
D&C 122: 7-9
"And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit... if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to headge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my [daughter], that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.
The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?
Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee... therefore, fear not... for God shall be with you forever and ever."

I love you God, and I love you baby. Thank you for the short time we had together.

Thus Far

Oh the joys of pregnancy..
In case you were wondering, here's what life has been for me as of late. And note: almost every symptom exists on this list of current life experiences. (warning: this might be more information than you were hoping for, although I know that many of you TOTALLY know where I'm coming from with all of this!)

- Nights interrupted with pee breaks. How I HATE waking up just to go pee.
- An un-easy stomach when I don't have food in my belly. Which is hard, because NOTHING & everything sounds good. Is that even possible?
- Yes, cravings! Oh man.. remember those KFC bowls? Yeah, craving number one, and it's just starting to fade.
- Almost constant nausea morning and night. (I have yet to throw up though! Knock on wood!.. and luckily this symptom is fading.)
- Very moody, mood swings (I am SOO sorry ANDREW!)
- Way too emotional..
- My boobs are KILLING me! I've learned I can't win with bras. They make me nauseous, but they help the pain go away.. dang it.
- I'm already using a hair-tie to support my open jeans. (Shh.. don't tell.)
- I'm almost always tired. Which makes me NOT want to wake up when I'm able to get some good sleep going on.
- My gag reflex loves to show up when I'm brushing my teeth.
- Any sight of blood makes me feel light headed, and the need to pass out. (note: this danger was very prevalent when viewing the end fight scene of Twilight at 2am. Oh man.. I'm glad I didn't faint!)
- Right now I have a love/hate relationship with working while being pregnant, I'm sure it will get better though!
- Not having any of my family up here just adds to the emotional stress of it all. I need you guys here for this dang it! Oh, Utah. You are not my friend right now.

That's pretty much it.. I think. I may have forgotten a couple. Haha. Rumor has it, that these will start to fade soon enough.. and I just can't WAIT till they do. A few of you have asked if we will be finding out what we're having, and the answer is YES! I'm too much of a 'preparer' to not! Also, I guess dogs are more aware of early pregnancy than we are. I was told that they can sense the pregnancy hormone before we even know we're pregnant! Crazy! So Birdie has seemingly been extra loving.. and hopefully when the baby comes, she will be protective rather than territorial. Anyway, I love you guys.. and thanks for all the support!

All Is Well

Sorry for my tangent this morning. I've just had a hard day and have officially decided to choose to be happy. And that's the beauty of this life. We have a choice. And true, it is JUST a blog.. and so I am taking off my pity party hat and calling it over. Thanks for your support friends. There's nothing more helpful than a kind word, call, email, text.. what have you, of genuine concern. I will be ok, and thanks for your love. I'm feeling better already. :) ..Andrew on the other hand is having a more difficult time, seeing as his computer currently isn't working and that's the means of his work and school.
Like I said, do forgive me. I am imperfect, and will not whine again. :)

Something's Hiding Here

This shop lifted my spirits today. Oh.. you know, we all have those days every once in a while.. the 'sit down in the shower and wallow' days. But that's beside the point. All of these items make me happy, and hopefully they bring a smile to you also.

Arachnophobia

Yes, this is one of my problems and it unfortunately has grown worse over the last couple of months. No thanks to our horrifying guests that I have been finding EVERYWHERE. I don't mean one or two.. I have found more than 8 of these disgusting creatures invading my home!! I've looked them up because they are all identical, and have found out they're locals. The little nasties are called the 'hobo' spider. I found plenty of images to share with you, but found it a bad idea because even when I see the image I get freaked out. I decided I didn't want to view my blog and feel the need to run away from the computer, so you can look them up if you'd like. Anyway they have been haunting me non-stop! Because of them, my brain has been sending my legs and arms false nerve signals, which have then been sending back false signals to my brain saying.. crawling creature is on your limb. Gosh dangit. I HATE hate hate SPIDERS. Andrew has learned that not only is he the bug killer, but he is essential to my safety ..and when he destroys what he was sent to get rid of, he has learned that the dead thing comes NO WHERE NEAR ME. When I find one and he isn't home, all heck breaks loose and I have to find some sort of 6 foot contraption to end it's life and then find some other way to get it to the toilet. This may sound harsh, but I know some of you can understand my fear. It's been chronic for me. Ever since I was a child I have never been able to even look into pages of insect books with beautiful photographs (well, what the photographers consider beautiful) of exotic breeds. I don't do well with insects period, but these are definitely my weakness. I am now officially paranoid. I can't even keep my feet on the floor when not wearing shoes. I will happily accept the winter if it means these terrible things disappear. This post was brought on by one found this morning while I was watching Oprah. Goodness, LEAVE ME ALONE you little terrors!
I hope this has not invoked a fear in any of you, I just needed to let it out!
