dog sitting.

I made this little bio about Bird & Hippo's day to day, to help future dog sitters.
Excuse me, Hippo was kind enough to type out his thoughts. So in case you find yourself curious about their needs and wants and loves, here it is. Hippo asked me to share it with everyone.

Our Daily Life
by Hippo

Hello new friends! We’re sad our parents are gone, but I’m sure we’re going to love you so much!

When you first get here… mom and dad usually wake up and let us out between 8 or 9am. We can get up earlier if you need us to. Birdie may be skiddish and run from you at first (she’s a skeptic like that) and possibly even nip at you until she wants to see you herself … but as for me, I already know you’re going to be my BFF. That’s why I will jump on you and hump you. This is how I let you know I AM SO HAPPY YOU’RE HERE! My mudder usually gets REALLY mad at me for this and yells DOWN, or NO JUMPING and spanks me and stuff, but that doesn’t really bother me. I am just too excited to stop! Once Birdie realizes how awesome you are, she will probably pee out of excitement when you first get here, so be sure to pet her in the yard… she usually does this when you first pet her. This happens any time of the day as well, so beware! So be sure to call her outside to greet you and pet her lots outside, to get her tinkles out. I just know this is what mudder & fodder do.

When we get let out in the morning… mom and dad tell us “go potty!” and then go inside and close the door, otherwise we’ll just want to get pet forever. We love getting pet.

Food time is next… When we’re pottying, that’s when mudder usually gets us breakfast (which is usually our whole day’s meal). She scoops 1 heaping scoop for Birdie, and 5 scoops for me! Then we should be done with pottying, and brought back inside.

Whenever we come back inside, I actually need you to do me a favor… when I poop, I actually need you to wipe my tail for me. I guess it gets dirty under the bottom of my tiny tail nubb. Mom usually asks me “Hippo, you need a wipe?” And I’m usually pretty good at coming to you to let you do it. I’m sorry about this, I would wipe myself if I could. I actually really like it when you do it. I start licking and stuff, because it feels good. I appreciate the help. Mom just doesn’t want poop rubbed in the house when I sit.

Back to the food.... Mom usually asks us “are you hungry!?” and we get pretty excited. She usually sets Birdie’s bowl away from mine by the rug/refrigerator. She likes to sit on the rug when she eats, and to be away from me so I don’t steal her food. And then mudder sets mine by the oven. I’m a good boy and won’t touch it though until you say “OK, go Hippo!” I love my food too much that Mom had to teach me to wait. If our container has run out, they keep the bag of food in the garage by the door. I try to sneak in there to get it, so don’t let me follow you in! Once we start eating, that’s usually when mudder leaves to take the fodder to work. They lock us inside, and don’t come back for a few hours. This is normal for us, so we shouldn’t worry too much if we don’t see you until the afternoon!

When you come back in the middle of the day… We usually just want some love, and a walk if you have the time. If not, just some play time in the yard is fun, too. I REALLY love when you play tug of war, or fetch with me with one of my toys, ESPECIALLY my broom. If you ask me “do you wanna play broom?!” I’ll usually go kinda nuts! I’ll kick your butt at keep away, just you wait.

If we go on a walk… I will pull you the whole way! …I LOVE to try to go faster! Mudder usually tells me “Hippo, no running!” and tugs the leash a bit. Sometimes this makes me want to slow down a little, but most of the time I still just want to GO! And amazingly enough when mom says to “stay” when we get to street corners to wait for cars, I stop. This makes mudder really happy. We usually do a circle around 3 or 4 blocks. Oh, and Birdie usually goes potty when we walk, so mom brings a plastic bag (which I guess she put with our leashes on the shelf. Mine is the leather one, and Bird’s is the black little adjustable one. And, I’m sorry if we see people on our walk. You might have to pull really tight and brace yourself and ask me to keep going, “come on Hippo” because I just want to see them so bad!

When we come back from a walk, or before you leave again in the afternoon… you can leave us outside if the weather is nice. We really love lying in the sun so much, and barking at the squirrels in the trees, and neighbors in the street. Mom gets a little mad at me for barking so much and usually tells me “no barking” if I start to go crazy along the fence, but we should be ok for a few hours until you come back in the night to put us to bed.

Before it gets dark… we need to go inside. Birdie gets cold outside if the sun goes away (unless it was a really hot day, then she’ll probably be fine longer). We probably already went potty by now, so after some more play time, and a bum wipe, we’ll be good to go back inside for the night.

At bedtime… I usually crawl into my cage and sleep there, but might sleep with Bird on the sofa. We might sleep upstairs by the bedroom door, because we’re a little confused where mudder and fodder are, but who knows. Bird usually sleeps with them in their bed (not fair), so she might be the most confused. She’ll probably just fall asleep though under the blankets on the sofa. She wants to stay warm. If you guys have a sleep over, you can close my cage door so I don’t get out, and I’ll sleep just fine. And Bird will want to sleep with you on the bed, under the covers. She likes to be in the middle. (:

And we’ll be happy and ready to see you the next day! Whenever mom leaves she asks us to “go lay down” and points to the sofa for Bird. I usually don’t listen to that garbage. If you want me to not try to leave with you, just ask me to Sit, and Stay. I’m usually pretty good at that. And we know what it means when you tell us “goodbye.”

And that’s usually how our day goes. We like it that way, but if you ever want to take us to the park or anything, we love that, too! The clam shell in the yard is our water dish, and if you don’t mind refilling it (and the dish inside) and watering some of the plants too, I know mudder would love it!

The parents don’t let us in their bedroom or in the bathroom when they’re gone, so they usually keep those doors closed, unless they’re home and using them. We really like to get into their laundry and trash and stuff. It’s so fun, but mom gets so mad! So we’re only allowed to roam the main part of the house.

If we’re ever naughty… or need a timeout, or you need me to be kept away from a kiddo… just put me in my cage. We know the words “that’s bad!” or “bad, Hippo!” and we both know “IN YOUR CAGE!”, although we don’t always go willingly. You can put Birdie in my cage too if she ever needs it, but she usually doesn’t get in trouble, or overwhelming like I do.

If it’s raining… just keep us inside all day after we get let out for potty breaks and on a possible walk. Birdie HATES the rain, so you might have to force her outside by setting her out there. And we’ll both need our paws wiped off before we come back in, since they’ll be muddy (we expect this so we usually don’t put up a fight).

If we need a vet… we’ve never been to one in the area, but if an emergency happens, or you think something is wrong.. Mudder put some coupons to some local places in the paper sorter that’s hung by the front door. I’m sure anywhere would work just great.

If you need to take us anywhere… we know what a car ride is, and if you ask us, “wanna go for a car ride?!” we'll bolt to the car and nearly pee ourselves in excitement!

Thanks for all your help. We're so excited to party with you!
Love,

Hips

early to bed.

Life has been pretty close to a literal roller coaster for us. So many things are happening, it's insane. So here are the crazy events. In order.

*GG is doing AMAZING. She is home recovering now, and her spinal doctor just gave her the news that she will only have to be in her upper body brace for a month longer, which is INCREDIBLE. A hundred thank yous for your concerns and prayers.

*My father's mother passed away a couple weeks ago. This, although sad news, is good news. Only because her health was so poor and it was high time for her to be with her hubby again who had passed over 20 years ago! So we are happy she's in a better place. Andrew and I were able to make it home for the funeral and got to visit with my extended family.

*Andrew and I are both graduating and are STILL figuring out where Andrew will work, where we'll live, and so on. With graduation just weeks away, my man has interviewed with Dreamworks, Disney, and Sony to name a few. He also has plans to possibly start up his own projects... so time will tell what will actually happen. And that time is fast approaching.

*While we were in California, visiting LA for some of the previously mentioned interviews.. Bird and Hippo were staying with my parents. And you know that saying.. it says something about how life gets going too good, so something's gotta give? Well, Bird ended up seriously injuring her back (not sure how, jumping off a couch can do the trick in a dachshund). She was found unable to use her back legs, or control her bladder/bowels. This temporary paralysis shook my universe. She's my baby. Adding salt to the wound.. I had been planning to go surfing that morning. My one and only chance to paddle out. Classic. We ended up having to spend the last day and a half of our trip at a Vet down there. Only to leave HOPING that she might regain control of her pottying so that BEST case scenario she would end up in a cart... wheeling around. Turns out, she's beating her odds like crazy. After steroid injections, oral pills to take at home, and LOTS of DOLLARS later.. she showed signs the very next day of being able to stand on her hind legs. HUGE. The vet was astonished. She is now walking (although wobbly) and can pee on her own! I don't have to squeeze her bladder. (We're still working on poo). TMI? She is truly a miracle. God must know. Wrong. GOD DOES KNOW how much I love her, and need her... and I thank him every day for letting me keep her, and for healing her little body.

You guys, all of your prayers have been so thoughtful and helpful.. thank you. I have grown a lot over the last month through all of these experiences, but that said, I am definitely looking forward to new chapters and having our life chill out a touch. And for Hippo to chill out a touch as well. Haha. (He's hilarious, we love him).

I woke up at 3am, and haven't been able to fall back asleep. So I consider this my 'midnight snack.' Hopefully it'll cause a cyber-coma. Back to bed I go.

living fur accessories.

On the note of pups...
I honestly believe that they can be one of the all time best accessories for your home. One of the things I love about Apartment Therapy is that most (if not all) contributors and readers are big time pet enthusiasts. HIGH FIVE! SO AM I! To the nth degree. So anyway, here are some canine's that have been represented on AT, and are truly rad accessories in their homes. The proof is in the pudding.

*all from the archives of Apartment Therapy

I think the pug on the poof is my favorite. Hahaha. So regal.
And of course tied for first is the baby dachshund. Doing Bird proud in a charming Eames rocker!

PS. Today is the last day to enter the giftaway!

Cheers!

Quickie.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sooo..
...we just love him! Andrew is smitten. He is just so much fun. A ball of sharp nibbles, clumsy struts, and endless naps ...and we wouldn't have it any other way! Ok, so I could go without the interrupted nights (up 3/4ish times a night with this bugger). Yeah, 'non dog people' don't realize that getting a puppy is like giving birth to a human baby, they gotta go potty all night long, too. And sometimes they're thirsty. And sometimes they get up and wont go back to sleep. So basically my first born wont be my first run around if you know what I'm sayin. But yeah, definitely not my favorite part considering I worship sleep from 12am-11am. It's definitely mildly brutal, but hey.. at least I knew what I was getting myself into. In other news, he's embracing potty training so well it's blowing my mind. Well sure he has accidents because he's not used to holding it in (that plus the fact that he's probably storing urine in his VEINS), but he totally knows that outside is for going potty ALREADY, and does it quick and even blesses us with double duties. Fur baby owners know that THAT right there is a golden ticket.

More importantly, how's Bird you ask? Well we knew it'd be a rough transition for the girl. She can be a diva, but we already knew that.. so we were preparing for the worst. Day 1- Excitement. Day 2/3- Jealously & annoyance (she didn't like that he wanted to 'nurse' on her, and eat her tail, alas he has never seen one before!), Day 4- Depression & hiding. Day 5/6- Acceptance & light playfulness. HALLELUJAH! We're still expecting set backs, but as for right now they're totally co-existing well, and mildly enjoying each other. Hippo likes Bird, but Bird is so not a fan of his sharp little teeth, but she has been realizing that she can be feisty back to an extent and make it fun.

So there you have it in a nut shell. Off I go to get a couple hours of sleep before his cuteness/fatness/feistiness wakes me up again.

Worth it.
GG, you'll love him.

Radiator.

This is how Birdie does winter.

If this thing didn't exist, she'd hate it just like I do.
Just sayin.

Hers is 3.

She wanted nothing to do with the ridiculous makeshift birthday hat, but it's true... our furry wiener child is 3 years old today! How time flies.

We love you, Turdling!

Weimaraner

I will adopt one someday...

..and this is one of the reasons why.
Does this picture not totally melt your heart?
Make you giggle?
Do you suddenly have the urge to watch Sesame Street?
Good.

Tillman

Tillman is the MAN!
He makes Andrew and I lust after a bulldog, and he makes me miss Roxy (my family's English bulldog)..

Anyway, check this out.
He'd fit RIGHT in with our little family. Bird would probably agree.
I love him.

For Norman

Bird has a new friend named Norman.
He comes with an owner named Lauren who is my new really good friend.. thanks to school and the fact that we're pretty much the same person.
Anyway, Norman is a yellow lab, and I think he would benefit from this tastefully done outdoor watering hole. Lauren can appreciate it I'm sure, considering she's also a San Diego beachy native.

Cheers. (:

Festivus

I know this post isn't much, but it's something... I saw this, and thought Bird would love it, haha. I seriously want to get it for her. Anyway, I'm keeping up with my busy self, finished Harry Potter, get to see my sis today, bracing myself for my man's week of finals, finishing up Christmas shopping, and getting ready to go home for the holidays! Weeew! Like I said... busy! Anyway, have a wonderful weekend, I believe mine will be full of a fresh snow storm. I'm actually looking forward to it. (:

Cheers!

Letter to Bird..

My radical grandma (we call her Street Gramma, or GG).. sends LOTS of emails. All kinds, as I have mentioned before. Anyway, today the letter found below was in my inbox from GG, and I found it quite humorous, and very true at points. Those of you who have pets (and treat them like humans as we do) I'm sure will find it amusing as well.

I am currently considering printing a copy and attaching it to the very bottom of our fridge for Birdie to read ..she is very short, even by dog standards. However, I don't recommend saying that to her face. She has a pretty severe case of little man syndrome, bless her mini-doxie heart.

Anyway.. enjoy.

PS. Thanks GG, we love you!

Dear Dogs and Cats:
The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however.. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible.
I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.
The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.
Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:
TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:
(1) They live here. You don't.
(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk
on all fours and don't speak clearly.
Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
(1) They eat less,
(2) don't ask for money all the time,
(3) are easier to train,
(4) normally come when called,
(5) never ask to drive the car,
(6) don't smoke or drink,
(7) don't want to wear your clothes,
(8) don't have to buy the latest fashions,
(9) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and
(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ....

The Rest Is History..

2 years ago (almost to the day).. we adopted Birdie.
We knew then and there she had to be a part of our little family (oh man it was hard at first), and it has already proven to be one of the best decisions we've ever made! ..yes, we're THOSE kind of dog people. (:

Turdling,
We love you. We fell in love with you the minute we pulled you out and let you embrace us with your tiny tongue and puppy breath. We went to check other dogs after, to make sure.. we're sorry about that. Leaving you hanging was not very nice, but we had to know you were the one for us! We almost brought Toby home from the shelter, and oh MAN are we glad we didn't ..he had 'lil terror' written all over him. You at times have been a terror, but your sweetness has always blown our anger over REAL quick. We love your nose darts, and your burrowing under blankets trying to escape your own bed, and the cutest begging habits we've ever seen, and so much more.
Thanks for letting us take you home.

Love, Me & 'daddy' (that's what we call him when we pick him up from school, she knows who he is.. it's just precious). (:

PS.. warning friends, these photos might have you feeling like you need to run out and adopt one RIGHT NOW.. so just do it. Haha, kidding, but she was the cutest puppy!

Terrible 2's

Turdling (Birdie), turned 2 yesterday!
Although this usually is an explosive age for humans, it definitely is an age of maturity for Bird.
We had a fun day, and made a rule for her behalf on her birthday.. we weren't allowed to say 'no' to her relentless adorable begging. So she got LOTS of treats all day long! Haha. Also, Auntie Abby was up to celebrate and to play with us for the weekend.. so I imagine it was one of the best birthdays she could EVER ask for!
It included..
Playtime in the park after dinner, dog cookies (literal cookies, I think even we could eat), chasing a cat!, playing with auntie Abby, getting a new collar, getting a new toy!, lots and lots of human food, & the birthday song. (:

Spoiled.. and that's how we like her! She's our babe, and she was hilarious all day. Note the ferociousness in her face above. Haha. Oh how we love her! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIRDIE!

Leap Of Faith

We're such proud parents.. now we need to get her to stop so that she can live till she's 20.

PS. The room has COMPLETELY changed, for the better.. more on that later. (:

Ol' Wet Nose

For those of you who have been wondering to yourselves.. 'hmm, what's that scaly-wag Bird been up to?' Yes, a common thought for most people. Well, she went on a drive up the Alpine Loop.. and LOVED it. (:

Orwell Clutch

I've been looking for the perfect clutch purse for some time now. Why? you may ask, well I tend to just slip my purses between my arm and my side as if they were meant to be a clutch. So why not get one that was intended to be so? Right. So that's where I'm at.. on my search.. when I stumble upon THIS GEM OF A CREATION!

Oh Bird! I could take you with me everywhere!
I just might get it.. (:

Suitcase Dog Bed

This was entered in a Design*Sponge DIY contest last year, and I love it so much I want to make Bird one! (it's the paisley that sold me). And, how appropriate for her to have a dachshund.. it makes it that much more impairitive to create one. (:
