Perry v. Schwarzenegger

“Today, a single federal judge has negated the will of the people of California. The central premise of the court’s ruling is that it is irrational for the citizenry to decide to retain the traditional definition of marriage. The court holds that the ubiquitous definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is a historical curiosity that serves no purpose whatsoever, but rather is based solely on anti-gay biases. Indeed, the court went so far as to brand as “irrational” all supporters of traditional marriage, which is the vast majority of all people, in America and throughout the world." -by ProtectMarriage.com

I have something to say about the matter. Just weeks ago I wrote a paper concerning this very subject out of my own curiosity. I decided that, although I have many religious reasons why I am opposed to gay marriage, I thought it would be best to show my perspective without involving religious reasons whatsoever (ie:
there are a ton of reasons why in the bible, the Prophet of the Lord told us to and he can see things we can't.. etc, etc.). Although I believe these are valid reasons, those who do not agree with us don't have the same beliefs. So I decided to analyze the situation from a strictly factual angle. Feel free to read my two cents if you wish, but commenting is closed due to the highly controversial nature of this subject. However, feel free to email me on the matter if you feel so inclined. Or give me a high five on facebook, because I know you're on both right now. (;

Over the last few years, gay marriage has become a hot topic of debate in the United States. It has recently been very controversial in states such as Hawaii and California due to ballots containing propositions either defending marriage as it is or containing amendments hoping to legalize it for homosexuals. The concern with gay marriage, for those in favor of it, is that it is a civil right that should be granted to all people. References to Women’s rights and abolishment of slavery are often used in defending this case. Those opposed to it argue that it infringes upon the definition of what marriage truly is. Religious freedoms and concerns with teaching children acceptance of such an act are generally referenced when defending this position. However, the true predicament lies in analyzing the United States’ Constitution. Everyone is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Should homosexuals then be entitled to pursue happiness through marriage? Furthermore, would gay marriage infringe upon the lives and pursuit of happiness of others? Yes is the appropriate answer to both of these questions. Although I believe that every individual is entitled to make their own decisions, I also believe that it should not be an option when it jeopardizes other individuals’ freedoms. This paper will explore the reasons why gay marriage imposes on the freedoms and pursuit of happiness of others.

First, where does the word and act of marriage originate from? Many cultures have their own definitions and explanations as to of why marriage should exist. One of the earliest recorded definitions outside of religious texts comes from Mesopotamia’s Hammurabi’s Code. It is a well preserved ancient Babylonian text that dates back to 1790 BC. The code consists of 282 laws that were written by Hammurabi “to bring about the rule of righteousness in the land” (King 1). Even in the earliest recorded code, the law of marriage was declared by a religious individual who wrote the laws with direction by God. As many other religions believe, God established the bond of matrimony when the very first individuals were placed on this Earth. This therefore proves that marriage is not an act originated by the United States Constitution, but rather, in many lifetimes previous, and all referenced by individuals claiming that God was their source of direction. Furthermore, this shows us that religion in fact plays a fundamental role in marriage’s very existence. Therefore, religious denominations have a right to be concerned when their belief of marriage is being altered, and are justified in feeling their religious opinions are being disrespected.

Where the definition of marriage is concerned, many anthropologists have written various definitions, all with a common identity. In the book The History of Human Marriage by Edvard Westermarck, marriage is defined as “a more or less durable connection between male and female lasting beyond the mere act of propagation till after the birth of the offspring” (71). In the anthropological handbook Notes & Queries of Anthropology, the definition is written as “a union between a man and a woman such that children born to the woman are the recognized legitimate offspring of both partners” (Garson 110). These various definitions include the commonality that marriage is in fact defined as being between a man and a woman.

Ultimately, without heterosexual couples, society would not exist. Homosexual marriage advocates defend their stance by proclaiming that homosexuals contribute to society the same as anyone else. However; without the help of fertility medical facilities, sperm banks, and the births of adoptable children, homosexual couples are unable to contribute to society for more than their lifetime. Societies are not built by single generations, but by the birth of children over many generations. Simple biology proves that without the sperm of a man and egg of a woman, human life would not exist. Should this lack of procreation then be lawfully accepted as a valuable entity of our society?

If homosexual marriage were to be legalized, childhood educational curriculum would be altered to include information of the “different” types of families. This is understandable; however, if children are to be informed, they should also be informed of the risks involved with such a lifestyle. Even though the production and consumption of tobacco products is legal, the government requires certain information to be available to the consumers. The serious health risks should be a requirement of consent where gay marriage is concerned. Various studies show that the health risks involved with homosexual lifestyle include physical damage, more than 6 types of cancer, more than 12 common STD’s, HIV/AID’s, and more (ElHage 4). If children are to be taught that gay marriage is a normal part of society, they should also be informed of the severe health risks involved which are comparable to the risks of second hand smoke. It is safe to say that the lives of more Americans would be at risk, and therefore gay marriage imposes on the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness of others.

Gay Marriage imposes upon families’ rights for parents to teach their children what they believe are correct principles. It endangers more lives by spreading more diseases and health risks amongst the community. Gay marriage would allow homosexuals to redefine the original definitions of marriage, which is religious in origin, and would impose on the religious rights of others. Homosexuals are unable to contribute their own biological children to this planet, and thus would not contribute to the building of future societies.

Thanks for listening to a ranting woman.

Not speaking ill

That is my new goal. To not speak poorly of others. I think as women especially, we have this weakness engraved into our very structure, and we need to do all that we can to live above it. I've been trying to do better at this over the last few months, but I am still very much aware that I have TONS of room for improvement. Apparently I needed a prophet to really knock the reality of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." President Eyring really struck a cord with me, although let's face it.. we've heard that time and time again right?? We teach it to children, when those who really need it (I think) are teenage girls & women. We are very good at coming up with excuses why our judgments or opinions are okay (and even necessary), and we need to stop.. I need to stop. Anyway, I know it's been a problem for me.. and I'm making a promise here and NOW, on my un-private journal.. to not speak ill of others. You can hold me to it, and if you find me slipping up.. please be ever so gentle and remind me. Thank you. And I mean.. how much does it hurt when we are on the other end and find out what's being said about us?? Yeah not good. I know for me at least that it hurts far worse than anything I've ever been through. So what makes it fair for me to cause that pain to others? It's not, and I'm sorry.. I wont do it ever again.
So what does this mean? It means I plan on being nice to everyone.. to them directly, and indirectly when talking to others (aka, behind their back). It means no more grudges. And it means most of all.. progress. We are all children of God, and I think we should take that responsibility much more seriously, and treat each other like the heavenly beings we are. It means, even when we are nice to someone, and they still persist on being mean.. we pray for them.
It will make the world a better place. That, I am sure of.
"I'm starting with the man in the mirror... if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change."
-Michael Jackson :)
You are welcome to join me on this mission. This is not a new battle by any means, but it's one I hope to be rid of for good.

Happy sabbath, and I hope you got what you needed out of Conference weekend as well.

Warm Thoughts

"You don't know everything, but you know enough."

How powerful that is. I almost started crying uncontrollably at the story this morning about the sweet young girl that was partially deaf (fully at birth), who spoke to a little boy about her age that was in a wheelchair without legs.. telling him that she can hear now, and that he'll be able to walk someday because Jesus will heal him. She doesn't know everything, but she knew enough. Her thought was pure and simple, and true. It was such a prime example of how we need to become as little children and exercise our faith in Christ.

I love this gospel, and I needed today. What beautiful messages.

Conference

Woohooo! I am so excited to hear what our Prophet & leaders have to share with us this weekend! Enjoy conference, and let's come back to our blogs and share the lovely things we take away from it.

Love, Arica.

The Ellen Show

Yes, Ellen Degeneres. She is a helarious woman. I was bummed to find out a day too late, that Stephenie Meyer was going to be on the Ellen show. Yep, it was yesterday. Poo. So naturally I went to Ellen's website to see if there were any clips and there were, so that was nice. It's astonishing that Stephenie has written 5 HUGE fiction novels in just 3 years.. 3! That is somethin else.

Anyway, while on the topic of Ellen.. I'd like to take a moment on my personal beliefs. And yes I'm going there, because I can. :) Currently my beautiful and diverse home state is undergoing some changes. It has now been legalized for gays to marry in the state of California (as I'm sure you're WELL aware). It's been a big deal down there, and the Latter Day Saints have been asked to play a huge part in getting marriage back to it's original state of 'man and woman'.

On a complete SIDE NOTE (toootally random story ahead).. here's a little story involving what the saints have been asked to do:
So, my brother in law Jeremy was making Prop 8 calls while I was down, to inform voters about the chance they have to vote yes, and solidify 'marriage is between a man and woman' once and for all. He was going through his list and made a phone call that went something like this with an old woman named Harriett (maybe? we'll stick with it)...
Harriett: HELLO??!
Jeremy: Hi Hariett, my name is Jeremy, how are you doing?
Harriett: OOOKAY.
Jeremy: That's great, well hey I'm one of your neighbors calling about Proposition 8 regarding gay marriage, have you heard a bit about this at all?
Harriett: WELL I'M NOT INTERESTED IN POLITICS, ...SO FORGET IT!!
the end.
We later found out while looking at Jeremy's call sheet that she was 108 years old!! No joke! Jeremy was like "no wonder why she's not interested, she's been through the great depression, and world war 1.. she probably figures the world's screwed anyway!"

Ok, sorry, it was really funny.. maybe you had to be there. Moving right along. So while checking for Stephenie Meyer clips, I stumbled upon a clip of Ellen & Porcia's wedding (since they were able to marry and all). I can honestly tell you I think Ellen is a GREAT person. But that does not mean I agree with her lifestyle. I've never really been 'homophobic', in fact.. I've had a few friends who were gay, not to mention my aunt who I love DEARLY. But when I saw these photographs and footage of two beautiful women (Porcia in a delicate dress and Ellen in a PANT suit) it just wrenched at my gut. It was all wrong. They were trying to be romantic and all I could think of was how disturbing and weird it was. Maybe if you saw it, you would know what I mean. It just hurt my heart to see how they are going about it the wrong way.

Yes, I understand these are my personal opinions, and is possibly a sensitive topic for some of you.. however, I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that I absolutely stand behind my faith. As well as my Prophet when he asks us to help solidify what the definition of marriage has always been.

More on Girls Camp

Here are some facts learned while in the MOAB mountains:

1. Bears (of ALL species ..even Polar Bears) really do LOOOVE honey. Pooh Bear was legit.

2. There are MORE Atoms in
1 grain of salt.. than there would be grains of salt in a salt shaker the size of the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING! (wrap your head around that one.. so crazy)

3. The murky brown hue of the Colorado River does NOT wash out of white cotton shirts.

..So girls camp was fantastic. We camped in a glorious Aspen tree grove that was absolutely gorgeous (and quite freezing in the night I might add -we were up about 9,000ft). The girls did a hike to the arches the day I was driving up, and the following day we canoed 11 miles down the colorado river!! yes.. ELEVEN! it was crazy, I thought to myself..
"oh whatever I'm not trainin' for the Olympics!"
-Jim Gaffigan, Beyond The Pale.
Haha, it was exhausting but really rad and I'm so glad we did it. After lunch
we were docked right by an AWESOME cliff that jetted out about 12 ft over the water. All the girls and leaders ended up jumping and twirling and flipping off.. and it was so much fun. It was a burning hot day so to swim in the cool water was SO perfect.

All in all, these are SUCH a good group of girls.. and I've always felt Utah is a sketchy place to raise teenagers (I still feel this way) ..but these girls are definitely an exception to my belief (yes along with other great friends I know that live around here).

I loved it.. if you ever have the chance to go to girls camp as "Sister Young" rather than one of the girls.. I highly recommend it. It was just too much fun!

(I WISH we went tropical and had clear canoes! SO RAD!)
